Why Your Agency Can't Just Target Your ICP

September 05, 20263 min read

The most common request I get is the least useful one. Can you target my ICP more?

Two problems with it. The targeting you’re describing doesn’t exist in Google Ads. And even if it did, it would be worse than what the AI is already doing.

The profile you’re handing me

You come to me with a customer profile. This job title. This income band. This age range. Homeowner, married, two kids, shops at these three places.

Google Ads has no field where I enter that and get those people back. I’m not apologizing for a limitation. I’m telling you it’s the wrong instrument.

Go look at what Google actually knows about you

Open your Google account settings and find My Ad Center. Look at the data sitting there about you personally.

It isn’t job title and age. It’s which sites you browse. What you’re actively shopping for right now. What you searched last week. What you watched. The pattern of who and what you’re connected to. Behavior, in the present tense.

Now hold that up against the profile you handed me. Yours is a static description of a person. Google’s is a live signal of what that person is about to do.

Demographic targeting is primitive next to that. You’re asking me to hand the machine a worse map than the one it already has.

So what are you actually hiring for

You’re not hiring someone who can target your ICP. You’re hiring someone who can get the AI to the point where it finds your buyer better than you can describe them.

That comes down to three jobs:

1.The math on that is here.

2.Scale in increments small enough that it never loses the thread.

3.Pipe your sales outcomes back in.

The third one is the one almost nobody does, and it’s the one that decides lead quality.

Google can’t tell a good lead from a bad one unless you tell it

Here’s where most accounts leak.

Google knows a form got filled out. It does not know that lead was tire-kicking, or sat outside your service area, or that they signed a $40,000 job last Tuesday. Not unless you send that back.

If you’re not piping customer data into Google Ads, the account optimizes for volume of form fills. That is exactly the account that produces the complaint “these leads are unqualified.” It’s doing precisely what it was told to do.

Send the sales outcomes back and the model changes its job. It stops looking for people who fill out forms and starts looking for people who buy. That’s the single largest quality lever in a paid account, and it lives in your CRM, not in the ad platform.

Which means your CRM has to be built for it. On a standard platform, we can wire that up. On a custom build, or something obscure Google has never heard of, that integration is real work and you should walk in knowing it.

Ask a different question

Next time you’re about to ask why the agency won’t just target your ICP harder, ask this instead: is my sales data making it back into the account?

That’s the question that changes the leads.
